Erythroxylon Coca is native to South America and is best known for its alkaloids, a powerful stimulant called cocaine. Walter Hill cultivated it in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens for its medicinal properties and as a substitute for tea, coffee, tobacco and opium. Including it in this series illustrates the importance of Botanical Gardens as hot-houses for experimentation, which was one of their main functions. It was one of a number of crops of economic value trialled in the colonies and our early botanists had the hard job of cultivating export quantities. It was grown in Queensland, but never became a major export crop. Bromeliads are generally hardy plants, ideal for the harsh climate of the subtropics. Like the Caladium, its decorative qualities were greatly admired by Walter Hill, who propagated them in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.
