This exquisite print is one of six botanical patterns in the Collected Patterns Letterpress series.
The Cinchona plant contains quinine, used to treat malaria, and was included in this series because of its importance during Brisbane’s early settlement. In the late 1800s, malaria was rampant and Brisbane’s first botanist, Walter Hill, was passionate about cultivating it to help protect the growing colony.
Printed on beautiful handmade Magnani Incisioni 650/5 Smooth White 100% Cotton Rag Paper with rubber-based inks using an original Heidelberg Windmill Letterpress, this print is one of a very limited edition of 10 impressions and is highly collectible.

Croton

This exquisite print is one of six botanical patterns in the Collected Patterns Letterpress series.
The Croton is a highly decorative plant and in this work, has a tribal feel. It's had a number of medicinal uses throughout history, including the use of Croton oil as a violent purgative. It's no longer used this way, however, the bark of some species is still used to flavour Campari and Vermouth. Crotons adorn gardens all over Brisbane thanks to Walter Hill propagating and distributing them during his early curatorship of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.

Tobacco

This exquisite print is one of six botanical patterns in the Collected Patterns Letterpress series.
Colonial Botanist, Walter Hill, imported many varieties of Tobacco, Sugar Cane and Tea to test in the Queensland soil and climate. Tobacco was included in this series to mark the importance of plants of economic value to the young Australian colony. The beautiful shapes of the leaves inspired a design almost tattoo-like in form.

White Clover

Colonial Botanist, Walter Hill, found that by combining legumes, including White Clover, with grasses, he could provide more drought resistant feed for livestock. This was incredibly important as keeping livestock healthy meant the young Australian colony could continue to grow and thrive.

Lucerne
Letterpress Print A4
This exquisite print is one of six botanical patterns in the Collected Patterns Letterpress series.
During early settlement in Australia, animals worked the land, provided transport and freight, and it was critical they were fed well. Brisbane Botanist, Walter Hill, mixed different grass seeds together or grass seeds with different plants, to create nutritious feed for livestock. Lucerne was crucial in this mix. The detailed form of this plant made a perfect subject for this pattern.
In the form of the artwork, I used a very simple mirroring repeat, but with a slight variation, reflecting one side upside down to create interest and movement.

Colonial Botanist, Walter Hill, predicted Sugar Cane would be extensively cultivated in Queensland after distributing a great number of canes to intending growers, with demand far exceeding supply. Little did he know it would become one of Queensland’s most exportable products!
