Coffea Arabica is said to produce better coffee with less caffeine than other major commercially grown coffee species. It was one of a number of crops of economic value trialled in the colonies and our early botanists had the hard job of cultivating export quantities. It was grown in Queensland, but never became a major export crop. The Cabbage Palm is found in moist open forest, often in swampy sites and on margins of rainforests or near the sea. Botanist, Walter Hill, spent considerable time cultivating native and foreign Palms and Cycads in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, growing a small plantation of them adjacent to the Garden's Aviary. Some of them are still there today, making them over 150 years old, a fact worth celebrating in this series.
